New House, New Challenge... 'Copperfield', Tiverton Moving to a new house last month has opened up new exciting genealogical opportunities. 'Copperfield' is an old Victorian style villa built in 1890 near the canal in Tiverton, Devon and I have been eagerly trying to find out more about the previous occupants of the house. It has a very friendly ambience and I hoped that this was reflected in its past ownership. After a lot of frustrating digging, I have discovered a wealth of interesting detail about its past owners, which has a distinctly international proclivity. It seems apt, that Levi and I should continue this tradition in taking the house on. ‘I just can’t find it, Levi!’ My initial attempts to find out a bit more about the house were hampered by the fact that late-Victorian and Edwardian road names and numbers are very different to today. Agricultural Boom and Bust: The Rise and Fall of the Littlefair Family

The Littlefair Family c.1910 L-R: George Gray; Jane Littlefair (nee Hart); Ethel Littlefair; Sarah Jane Gray (nee Littlefair); Ada Hutchinson (nee Littlefair); Edward Littlefair and Maud Littlefair (holding the violin). This photograph dated around 1910 is possibly one of my favourites. The country scene, idyllic: the family all together, the sweet blonde children in their white frocks, the unmarried aunt holding the violin, roses trailing in the foreground. It is only when you take a good look at the faces, you can see the strain. This is a family that over the course of the 1800s enjoyed the farming boom and the ensuing bust of the agricultural depression and survived (just about) into the dawn of the new century. Edward Littlefair (b. 1835 with one of his granddaughters) My focus falls primarily on the gruff looking Abraham Lincoln look alike on the far right. Relocation, Relocation, Relocation...

It is hard to believe that it is nearly a year and a half since I started this blog. It has provided a great deal of enjoyment and a way of showcasing my research. I have also managed to get an article published as a result of it (in Carloviana 2017) and it has added another level to my A-Level History teaching this past year (Industrialisation and Social Change: 1769-1928). However, after a number of frustrating months, I have made the decision to move the blog's host to Blogger. Though aesthetically pleasing, I was finding Weebly to be quite clunky, with no way of easily locating past posts, and the name I chose (Ex Familia Fortitudo - Through Family - Strength) was proving difficult for even myself to remember.
